DESCRIPTION
This is an easy 1.5 km walk that, including stops, takes about one hour to complete. It connects the Vânători Neamț Natural Park Visitor Centre with the “Dragoș Vodă” Zoo, both attractions being accessible with a single ticket. In addition to providing fascinating information about the forest, the trail includes a number of practical features: boardwalks, an ingenious bridge inspired by a Leonardo da Vinci design, steps on steeper sections, and thoughtfully designed resting areas, including oak leaf-shaped benches, a bench inspired by the Fibonacci sequence, and a welcoming lounge chair.
Along the route, ten interpretation stations guide visitors step by step through the forest ecosystem. The adventure begins with a welcome panel that introduces the trail and outlines the rules visitors should follow. Continuing the walk, the hazel interpretation panel explains how dense hazel thickets support the regeneration of young trees and how hazelnut shells can reveal clues about the wildlife living in the forest. At the old oak panel, visitors learn about the remarkable strategy by which oak trees produce huge acorn crops every five to seven years. The next panel highlights the story of spruce stands affected by drought and the natural transition toward broadleaf forests.
The trail then presents the forestry formula used to describe stand composition through a panel dedicated to natural forest stands, followed by information on the vital role of wetlands as natural sponges and water filters. The panel on fir regeneration explains how broadleaf canopies provide favourable growing conditions for young firs and explores the cultural significance of the fir tree in traditional Romanian heritage. Visitors will also find a useful comparative chart showing the characteristics of the roots, bark, leaves, and fruits of oak, hornbeam, ash, and wild cherry. The final panels explain how to distinguish tourist trail markings from forestry and protected-area markings and demonstrate why a fallen tree is not waste, but rather a vital engine of life that supports bacteria, fungi, and wood-feeding insects.
The trail was developed by the Association of Ecotourism in Romania for the Vânători Neamț Natural Park Administration.
