DESCRIPTION
Spend 7 nights in the middle of nature, in a traditional Romanian mountain village, with scattered houses and impressive views. The program includes daily walks through spectacular canyons, virgin forests and Saxon villages. You can go in search of brown bears and explore the mediaeval town of Brasov as well as Bran castle, best known as the residence of Count Dracula.
Day 1
Start in Bucharest; transfer to Măgura
On arrival of the group flight at Bucharest Airport you will be transferred by minibus to the accommodation. The guesthouse where you will be accommodated – Villa Hermani – is situated at approximately 165 km from the airport.
Food and refreshments will be served during the transfer.
Villa Hermani is situated in the remote and beautiful village of Măgura at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains, located within the boundaries of the Piatra Craiului National Park. Our friendly hosts at the Villa Hermani possess a wealth of knowledge on Transylvania, wildlife conservation and serve delicious homemade food.
Day 2
Daywalk visiting Kalibash villages and bat cave.
After breakfast, you will spend the day walking around the area surrounding the unique Kalibash villages of Măgura and Peștera. You will visit these traditional houses and learn about the history of the settlements. Also, you will visit a bat cave, home to five separate species of bats.
Day 3
Horse-drawn cart and hike in Bârsa Valley; evening brown bear watching.
Horse-drawn carts will take you into Bârsa Valley, while you can enjoy the spectacular view to Piatra Craiului Mountain. After leaving the carts, follows a hike through the hay meadows uphill to a hermitage. In the evening, it is time to go brown bear watching accompanied by a professional forester who will take you to a safe hide deep in the forest.
Day 4
Hike through alpine pastures to Coja and Peștera
Hiking day up to the alpine pastures from where you can see the 25 km ridge of Piatra Craiului and enjoy the calm of the area.
Day 5
Walk along a high alpine trail
You will explore the second biggest mountain in the region, Bucegi. After driving to Bușteni you will go by cable car up to Babele and ‘The Sphinx’ rock formations. From here it starts your high alpine trail heading to Omu, the highest peak of the Bucegi Massif at 2,505m. Hiking along the trail will offer you breathtaking views as well as a large variety of alpine flowers.
Day 6
Visit Dracula’s Castle and Brasov; observe local birdlife
After breakfast, you will be taken by car to Bran Castle, also known as Dracula’s Castle.
From Bran Castle it is less than an hour’s drive to the region’s culture and economic heart, Brașov. You will have a guided tour of the town before having some time to explore at leisure. In the late afternoon, staff from Brasov University will take you to a lake area just outside of town to discover some of the local birdlife.
Day 7
Visit Brown bear sanctuary; hike to Vulcan
You will visit Libearty, Europe’s largest brown bear sanctuary. The visit is followed by a gentle hike across meadows to the village of Vulcan.
Day 8
To Bucharest Airport
Transfer to Bucharest airport.
