The Treasures of Agighiol – Dobrogea Chimeric Geopark

DESCRIPTION

The thematic trail “The Treasures of Agighiol” crosses a protected area within the Natura 2000 site ROSCI0060 – Agighiol Hills, offering an easy hiking experience through a spectacular landscape with geological, biological, and historical value.

The trail takes us on a journey of 250 million years, beginning in the Triassic period, on Pietros Hill. Along the way, we discover fossils that tell the story of life’s evolution on Earth, traces of the Agighiol Treasure – including the famous Getic helmet from the 4th century BC – and rare biodiversity adapted to the Pontic steppe.

Natural attractions include Triassic limestone, a glade of wild peonies, forest orchids, and four legally protected species:

  • Campanula romanica (Dobrogea bellflower)
  • Testudo graeca ibera (Dobrogea tortoise)
  • Spermophilus citellus (European ground squirrel)
  • Mesocricetus newtoni (Dobrogea hamster)

From the viewpoint, Lake Razim, the largest lake in Romania, is also visible, creating a connection to the southern Danube Delta.

The trail was developed by the Association of Ecotourism in Romania for Asociația Mai Mult Verde, in partnership with the Dobrogea Chimeric Geopark, GeoD Association, the National Agency for Protected Natural Areas, and the Valea Nucarilor Town Hall.
