DESCRIPTION
The thematic trail “Between Nature and History” is a short and accessible route that surrounds the Visitor Centre of the Iron Gates Natural Park. As they follow the trail, visitors enter a deciduous forest where traces of trenches from the First and Second World Wars can still be found, discovering the connection between local history and the natural values of the area.
The trail highlights the story of Pamfil Șeicaru, journalist and war veteran, founder of St. Ana Monastery, as well as the history of the town of Orșova, which dates back to Roman times. Thematic panels provide information about the forest’s flora (butcher’s broom, crocus, monkey orchid, sessile oak) and fauna (wolf, roe deer, badger, squirrel), as well as Hermann’s tortoise (Testudo hermanni), a protected species and symbol of the park, represented by the mascot Hermis.
At the end of the trail, the panel “Be an Eco-Hero” encourages responsible behaviour in nature, explaining the decomposition time of waste.
