Christmas Traditions

DESCRIPTION

In the villages of the Eco Maramureș destination, Christmas is celebrated with joy and deep respect for ancient traditions, passed down from generation to generation. The holiday begins with a visit to the church, where locals, dressed in traditional attire, take part in the religious service.

On Christmas Eve, groups of carolers go from house to house, announcing the Birth of Christ through authentic colinde (carols), accompanied by the ringing of bells and the sounds of traditional instruments. The village women welcome them with homemade cozonac (sweet bread), walnuts, and apples, while the festive tables are filled with delicious dishes prepared using recipes inherited from their ancestors.

A highlight of the celebration is ‘Viflaimul’, a folk theater performance with masks and traditional costumes, reenacting the biblical story of Jesus’ birth. The entire community comes together in a truly authentic holiday atmosphere, where age-old customs are carefully preserved, offering visitors a unique and deeply moving Christmas experience in Maramureș.
