Shielded by the old volcanic Ţibleş and Lăpuş mountains, keepers of stories of a long gone era, Țara Lăpușului reveals itself through an amazing mosaic of cultures, pastures, forests and traditional villages. On leaving the village, you may be surprised to see herds of water buffalo, lazing next to the waters of a cool river, dropping down from the mountain. But up there in the mountains, there are other watery wonders: freshing and enlivening mineral springs. Downstream you can often find a small gorge or canyon. If you want an gentle walk, the cool beech forests will amaze you: they are among the oldest in Europe!
The villagers, keepers of ancient traditions and crafts, know how to harvest and work wood with grace: testimony to their skills are the houses and wooden churches all around you. However to really discover the place and times past, seek out the local legends: Pintea - a brave and famous outlaw - comes from hereabouts!
If you are here on a weekday, you will observe the hardworking people, quietly going about their business. But if you find yourself here on a festival or fair day, you will discover you are in the very best place to party! In Ţara Lăpuşului you may travel alone but you will celebrate with friends - old and new - and always with joy.
Since no celebration ends without a feast, don't forget to try the specific culinary delights of this area: "cocoradă" (sheep cheese pie, oven baked); "brozda" soup (made from the leaves of the Small Teasel, found on marshland) with sheep buttermilk; maize bread; "găluște cu păsat" (cabbage leaves stuffed with sweet corn); gulash with Wild Thyme; or a refreshing drink of Forest Plantain syrup with Coltsfoot.
