| ȚARA DORNELOR (THE LAND OF DORNA) - CĂLIMANI MOUNTAINS |
| Description |
A wander through Ţara Dornelor is like travelling back in time … geological, natural and human. The mountains surrounding this area hide a special story that sprang from the depths of the Earth over 7.5 million years ago, when powerful volcanic eruptions sculpted the landscape, dominated by rivers of lava and hot ridges of ash. Many vestigies remain, like the bizarre rock formations of the 12 Apostles and the Red Rocks, the multitude of thermal and mineral water springs and the impressive volcanic caldera of the Călimani Mountains.
In Ţara Dornelor, Nature itself has ancient tales to tell, dating back hundreds of years. The dense and shady forests of spruce, sprinkled here and there with towering beeches and the rare Swiss pine (Pinus cembra) reveal - to experienced travellers - the fresh tracks of red deer, wolf or even Capercaillie. Meadows abound with countless fragrant, colourful and healing flowers, while among the rocky cliffs stands of Mountain pine are laid out like a vast labirinth.
The Dorna villages, scattered among the meadows, inspire balance among people who respect the order of place and time. Always with a good word to say, your hosts will serve you with delicious dishes cooked from local products: smoked trout in a pine-shoot mandolin; Bucovina mixed grill; pork, rice and cabbage rolls cooked in whey cheese; or potato cakes with sour cream. Only then can you depart - happy and well-fed!
