Declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the Danube Delta is one of the largest river deltas in Europe. The Danube Delta is the most recently formed landscape in Romania, dynamic and everchanging, awaiting the curious gaze of those who will appreciate its special charm. Come and be amazed by waterways lined with reeds, rush and sedge, interspersed with dwarf willows. Here and there you will find labirinthine marshes that are difficult to cross.
If you get as far as Letea or Caraorman, allow time for a special walk - for here, among the sand dunes and extensive canals and waterways, you will find rare forests of oak, ash and alder. But the Delta`s main attraction is the birds - hundreds of species, millions of birds, coming here to nest from remote corners of Europe, Russia, Africa and the Middle East. Nowhere else in Europe can you see such concentrations of birds in migration, along with colonies of White and Dalmation Pelicans, the famous Red-breasted geese, or an occasional White-tailed (Sea-) Eagle.
You should also take time to meet the people who live here! A mosaic of ethnic groups (Romanians, Lippovan Russians, Ukrainians, Greeks, etc.) whose cultural background can still be found in the specific architecture of the traditional houses, in local cuisine and at the frequent festivals. Make sure you taste the local cooking, true sensory delights such as: "plachie la cuptor" (baked fish with tomatoes and bay leaves); carp baked with cabbage; meatballs and peppers stuffed with fish; or "malasolca" (stewed fish and potato).
After dinner be sure you have your camera at the ready - the unique landscapes will keep you captivated for some time, eventually lulling you to sleep with the vivid hues of yet another amazing Delta sunset!
