Where?
-
The Saxon Villages of Southern Transylvania, in an area roughly delimited
by the three main towns of Sibiu, Sighisoara and Brasov. The project headquarters is Saschiz commune and
village, where ADEPT has a Tourist Information Centre.
-
The area is a cultural treasure, the peaceful and attractive green countryside a remarkable survival of medieval
Europe, a mosaic of old-growth forests, wildflower-rich hay-meadows and dry steppe slopes, with fortified churches,
unspoiled 18th century-style villages and non-intensive mixed farming in ecological balance with nature and wildlife.
ADEPT is trying to protect this special countryside and give local people a secure future by promoting sustainable
agriculture and the production of high quality food products, along with encouraging ancient crafts and skills, ecotourism
and nature conservation. The spectacular wildflower meadows are probably the best and most extensive
surviving examples of this fragile and fast-disappearing habitat in Europe. Friendly, hospitable local people, traditional
home-made village food and timeless rhythms of country life such as the evening procession of cows returning from
pasture give the traveller a memorable glimpse of an older Europe, one not seen for generations over much of the
continent. The history of the Saxons themselves, a distinctive ethnic and cultural community that came to Transylvania
over 800 years ago, and of how they managed and nurtured this landscape, gives the area a unique atmosphere. The
old towns too have some of the most spectacular medieval town plans and architecture in south-eastern Europe.
